   History of Our Centralization

On July 21, 1930 the voters of 27 small schools in and around Marathon voted by a large margin to form a centralized school district and elected a new school board.  This was to become one of the first central school districts in New York State.  Those voters and that new school board are our heroes.  They planned a “state-of-the-art” school building that was the finest from Binghamton to Syracuse, and again, the voters of the district approved the plan.  To take this major step during the depression showed courage and faith in the future.  That future was our grandparents, our parents, our children and us.  It brought education to the rural areas and comprehensive schooling to all children in the new district.
The new building and the revamped 1925 building were open for business in September of 1932.  June of 1933 saw the initial class graduate from the new Marathon Central School.  The Class of 2008 will become the 75th class to leave this well kept building, build so long ago.
We honor that pioneer board, and the voters who displayed such foresight - foresight that is still paying dividends for our students and our community 75 years later.
